This is the fun part of starting a business or moving a business online. Whether you have a bit of branding already, maybe a logo or a couple of brand colours, once you pivot your business online, you will need much more of this graphic work. I recommend getting a clear idea of what your brand looks like, so you don’t end up with messy and inconsistent work. Use Pinterest and create a couple of mood boards as the first step to get a clear vision for your business. Then it is time to build your brand.
To up-level your brand image, you can also get someone to do a brand package for you. There are plenty of people that work with small businesses to create these, that don’t cost a fortune. They’ll work with you to bring a logo and a few other bits and pieces to life, that you can then use online.
Another option is to create your own simple brand package on a platform like Canva or Adobe Spark. There you can create colour palettes, set brand fonts and create or upload logos.
I recommend you choose a few fonts, colours and general “looks” that you stick with across all media, from website to social media posts. This way your costumes will start to recoognise your work and relate that to your business.
Today you do NOT have to be tech savvy or now how to code or programme to build your own website. With platforms like Shopify, Wix and Squarespace making it super simple and easy to build your own website and even host it. You can use a ready made theme and make it your own or start with a blank canvas, either way it’s simple and almost foolproof. Plus most of these plans are super affordable. What your website looks and works like, will be different depending on the type of business you run, but I always recommend having 3 key pages. Firstly a landing page that is inviting and easy to navigate. Secondly a place where people can get in touch with you, whether it’s an email address and contact form or you clearly state that they can reach out on social media, it’s important that you make yourself available and approachable. Finally, an “about you” page. You might think that people are only interested in your products or services, as the person and passion behind the brand, you should always tell your story and give your customers an option to get to know you.
Finally, social media and community building. You might already have a profile and presence on social media, but if you are pivoting your small business online it is more important than ever, as you can tap into your existing community and grow from there. However, contrary to what you might think, it’s not necessarily about numbers here. You can drive a successful business, with a small following, if you find the right people that truly connect with you and your brand. When it’s time to jump on social media, above “hacking the algorithm” and “growing your following”, I recommend that you stay true to yourself and portray your passion for your business through your channels.
