Travelling this summer I’ve had the opportunity to practice yoga outdoors and take advantage of the beautiful weather. I’m not going to lie, I have missed my challenging studio classes but I can’t complain with views of the ocean or mountains to start my morning practice. Here are five reasons why you should try to take your yoga practice alfresco every once in a while:
There is nothing better than breathing in fresh air during your yoga practice. The smell of freshly cut grass, the sea breeze or the scent of fresh flowers is great for the soul. Get out of that air-conditioning or sweaty studio and breath in some of the good stuff.
Salutes to the sun has a whole different meaning when you can actually feel the warm rays of sunshine on your body. Soaking up some vitamin D is so good for the body, mind and soul whilst getting in your sun A’s and sun B’s.
No need to search for the perfect spotify playlist, nature’s soundtrack is the best. Birds, bees, children’s laughter all make for beautiful background music for your practice. Search out a quiet spot in the park, an outdoor area at home or if you live near the sea – take your practice to the sand.
Practicing outdoors can also come with a few extra challenges that wouldn’t normally occur inside your home or studio. Uneven ground can add another level of difficultly onto your balances or a fly buzzing around your head can take away your concentration. These challenges are perfect to strengthen your will power and make your practice that little more rewarding.
Practicing outside without a mat will not only improve balance, but also help to ground you to mother nature. Connecting barefoot to the grass, sand or earth can help recharge your body into the power of the earth. I find living in London it’s hard to do this, so any chance I have I practice in the park with no mat and it’s magical.
No matter where you live, do yourself a favour and go outdoors for a little alfresco yoga. It’s great for the mind, body and soul and can also improve your practice.
Where is your favourite place to practice outdoors?
