The Bled area in Slovenia is renowned for it’s picturesque landscape and plentiful summer activities. Situated in the Julian Alps of the North West region of Slovenia, Lake Bled is a favourite with families and also with couples tying the knot.
What drew me to the area was the amount of outdoor active things to do during a holiday. I visited Lake Bled for 4 nights during July with a fellow travel blogger and we had THE BEST time! So if you are an active junkie like myself and are planning a trip to Slovenia, here are my top active-wellness things do when visiting Lake Bled.
Measuring just 2km by 1.4km, the emerald green lake is the perfect place to cool off in the midst of summer. The lake has many sandy banks scattered around the perimeters which makes for the ideal spot to roll out your towel. You will find swimmers doing their morning laps or holiday-ers attempting to swim all the way to the middle of the lake to the small island.
You are spoilt for choice for floating devices on Lake Bled. You can rent a row boat, paddle board or kayak for a small hourly fee and spend the day paddling around the Lake. There is a picture-postcard church on an islet so make sure you dress appropriately if you want to wander inside.
If I’m not exploring by water, I do love bike riding to discover a new area. We rented our bikes from our hotel, but there are also a are few stores in town that rent bikes. Ride around the circumference of the lake stopping off along the way for an ice cream or a photo at the lovers heart.
There are collection of walking trails around Bled ranging from 20 to 45 minutes in duration. Take your choice between pleasant and difficult levels, as all walks are surrounded with beautiful pine, oak and birch trees. The mountains hugging the Lake below makes for a few great photography opportunities. Even if you aren’t the active traveller, I would recommend the road that leads you up to the Castle. The Medieval castle rises 139 m high over Lake Bled and is often used for weddings.
The Vintgar Gorge has to be one of the most photographic walks you can take while visiting Lake Bled. The 1.6km long ravine meanders through the vertical rocks of the Hom and Bort hills and delights onlookers with its various waterfalls, pools and rapids. It’s a short 15 minute drive from Lake Bled and it’s a sight not to miss with it’s natural beauty and wonder.
If horse riding is your thing, there are wide open fields and gorgeous trail rides to enjoy near Lake Bled. There are also local companies which will pick you up from your accomodation and take you to their farm only 15 minutes drive away.
If you like a little more action in your water sports, then white water rafting is for you. Combining pure adventure in a natural setting, rafting in Bled is one of the best ways to experience the outdoors. During the 2h ride on the Sava River with Fun Tourist, the experienced guides will provide a safe and fun-filled journey. My tips: take a go pro as the scenery is to die for but beware the water is freezing!
Now if you are looking for a spa and sauna experience, you need to stay at the unique luxury glamping resort, Garden Bled Village. The eco-luxe village has a Finnish style sauna, an open air massage deck and a living swimming pool. The glamping tents and eco village definitely gets my Wood and Luxe stamp of approval. I’m planning an active yoga retreat there next summer so let me know in the comments below if you’d be interested to come along.
Now who’s up for a trip to Slovenia?
